CineVegas 2006: Day 9 (Closing Day)
http://www.cinevegas.com

Saturday. CineVegas Big Closing Day and Night. There was an added screening of “5 Up 2 Down” at 11:00 am and then at 4 pm Christina Ricci was presented with CineVegas Half-Life Award. Christina introduced her 1998 film “The Opposite of Sex.” I had seen the film on DVD, but it was terrific watching it in a Brenden theatre.

If you haven’t seen “The Opposite of Sex,” go rent the DVD. It is the story of a 16 year old Louisiana girl (Ricci) who moves in with her homosexual half-brother (Martin Donovan) and immediately starts coming on to his sexual partner (Ivan Sergei), finally forcing him into an affair in which she becomes pregnant. The whole affair blows into a scandal exposing her school teacher brother and the true parent of the child is called into question as it is revealed that there have been a series of lovers.

At 6:15 pm the Red Carpet arrivals was in place for the 7:00 pm screening of the closing night film, “Lies and Alibis” starring a great cast: Steve Coogan (“24 Hour Party People”), Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Selma Blair, James Brolin, Sam Elliott, Henry Rollins and Jaime King. “Lies” is the story of a man who runs an alibi service for adulterous husbands and gets into a jam with a new client. In trying to remedy the situation, he must rely on an alluring woman. Filmmakers Matt Checkowski and Kurt Matilla introduced the film. As you know, Romijn and Marsden are currently in “X Men: The Last Stand.”

After “Lies and Alibis” out-of-town pass holders took shuttle buses to the Vegas Magazine 3rd Anniversary and Christina Ricci-hosted Closing Night Party at Green Valley Ranch Resort. The lavish party was not a disappointment! Among the partiers were Dennis Hopper, Kristin Cavallari, Dylan McDermott, Brande Roderick, Chris Kattan, and Sahaa Lathan (who has enraged Mrs. Denzel Washington by reminding interviewers that she is not Denzel’s girlfriend - though they did co-star in “Out of Time” together.)

Christina, so terrific in “Monster,” is on the cover of this month’s big, glossy Vegas Magazine.

As “The World’s Most Dangerous Film Festival,” the 2006 CineVegas Film Festival spotlighted sex, adultery, drugs and dangerous social situations. The festival screened 59 films and several shorts. “G.I. Jesus” received the Grand Jury Prize (stolen from “Artie Lange’s Beer League”); “Park” the Audience Award; “5 Up 2 Down” the Special Award for Cinematography; and “The Favor” and “The 4th Dimension” received Honorable Mentions. “Nacho Libre” nothing?

That’s the wrap-up of the eighth CineVegas International Film Festival.
